I’ll be honest and say that I’d probably have more fun at a playground as an adult than I ever did as a kid. Seriously, give me a set of monkey bars and a bench in jogging distance, and I could probably cancel my gym membership entirely.

Well, there are a few downsides to this arrangement.

Once you bolt one of these bad boys into a wall, it’s going to take you a minute to pull it back out. And if you don’t own the property that you’re living in, I’d strongly recommend speaking with your landlord before installing one of these.

In a similar vein, you need to make sure that you’re installing these correctly. You can’t just mount a pull up bar into drywall and expect to hold its own weight, much less your own. Just about all wall mounted bars require you to find the wooden studs behind the wall, clearly mark them, drill holes into them, and finally mount the brackets of your bar onto the wall.

If you mess it up, you’ll probably have to deal with fixing up a ripped open wall on top of any possible injuries to your body.

Who Benefits from a Wall Mounted Pull Up Bar?

If you’ve got plenty of space in your home and want the capability of doing pull ups, I don’t really see a reason why having one would be a downside.

If you’re building your own private gym in the garage, it’s never going to be complete without a proper pull up bar. Or a machine, but those aren’t as awesome.

If you’re just looking for an additional tool to occasionally use to exercise with, then I can better understand why you wouldn’t want to go through the hassle of installing one of these. But if you’re seriously trying to get in shape primarily with body weight exercises, a mounted pull up bar is a great, and inexpensive, investment to make.

These tools are also equally great for building muscle, toning, and losing weight.

It goes without saying that if you exercise, you’ll get stronger, but one of the biggest reasons why building muscle mass is a great way to lose fat is due to your body’s increased caloric needs. Pros

  • This bar has a very old school feel to it. It’s solid, can take a huge amount of punishment, and is simple to use.
  • Being able to hold up to 500 lbs of weight, you have the option to strap yourself full of additional weight for a more intense workout.
  • The lack of furnishings doesn’t detract from its use. This bar does the job and I can appreciate that simplicity.

Cons

  • The way the parts are packaged almost ensures that there’ll be some scratches on the paint job by the time it ships to your house.
  • With a bar length of 50 inches, you’re going to need to clear out some free space if you’re mounting this onto a wall.

 Capable of bearing up to 500 lbs of user weight, this large exercise bar can be mounted vertically or horizontally depending on your needs.

Pros

  • Despite its affordability, this product is built to last and has a whole lot to offer.
  • Even without a bunch of add ons, I’d take a sturdy pull up bar that’s going to last me for years instead of a gimmick that’ll only last me a short while.
  • You have the option to purchase an additional steel tube and bracket to convert this item into a multi person pull up bar.
  • Being able to hold up 500lbs, it won’t have trouble keeping even two heavier individuals on the bars at the same time.

Cons

  • This item has the longest bar length of all the products on this list. While useful, you might have to mount this on the ceiling if you can’t find the extra wall space.

Besides being able to accurately target specialized muscle groups, this bar is great for entry level fitness enthusiasts. Starting out, one of the most annoying things I had to deal with besides being sore, was my lack of calluses on the flesh where my palms meet my fingers. While my skin eventually thickened after constant abuse at the gym, doing pull ups with blisters wasn’t exactly fun. It’s for that reason I recommend this product to gym rat ‘pinkies’.

Pros

Cons

  • A part of me is still a fan of traditional pull up bars despite the advantages of this type of product. I’ve found that this type of bar can be somewhat flimsy.
  • People with smaller hands are going to have trouble getting a good grip on the handles.

The most expensive product on this list comes with the most features. This isn’t just a wall mounted pull up bar. It’s also a dip and vertical knee raise station. Given the limited amount of gym space I’m allotted for my ‘toys’, being able to consolidate multiple functions into one piece of equipment is a godsend.

Pros

  • You can apparently do 50 different exercises with this tool.
  • You can easily swap out parts for the type of exercise you need to do.
  • It can take a max load of 440 lbs.
  • The design itself is actually quite portable. You’ll be able to easily mount this device on a wall.
  • Despite being the most expensive item on this list, it’s barely going to set you back a little over a $100.

Cons

  • While you can’t do dips on a traditional pull up bar, vertical knee raises aren’t much of a problem.
  • I wouldn’t kip using this design, the modular design is secured by open hooks and don’t actually lock into them.

Another multi-grip style bar, this item is also able to boast of being the least expensive product on the list. This exercise bar is able to hold up to 300 lbs of user weight and also uses padded foam grips to keep you from slipping. While a decent entry level design, I would recommend something else for people who are looking for something sturdier.

Pros

  • Very cheap price for the exercises it allows you to do.
  • Lightweight design is easy to install.
  • Multi-grip design is intuitive to use and simple to clean.

Cons

  • This product feels flimsy to me and is only rated for 300 lbs. It’s fine if you’re only going to do the occasional pull up, but I don’t know if it’ll hold up to hard use.
  • The steel bar isn’t actually a single piece and is held together in the middle with included hardware.
  • I wouldn’t be surprised if the middle of the bar starts to bend after prolonged usage.

Going over the reasons why this product worked best for me, first, is just how sturdy this piece of equipment is. I could probably use it for years without any structural failures in the steel. Secondly, I like having the additional option of mounting this bar onto the ceiling if I need to.

But the most important reason is this. When combined with my previous positives, the wide length of the bar ensures that I’ll be able to do just about all the different pull up exercises I want to do with it.

It’s tough, long-lasting, simple, and versatile. While the ECOTRIC model was a close runner up, I prefer this product for the slightly lengthier bar.
