Exercise bikes are great for people who need to work out their lower body. You can also work out your core and back as well.

Plus, they make great at-home exercise machine because they’re inexpensive.

I came across the XTERRA Fitness FB150 Folding Bike and I was impressed by what it offered. It’s affordable, compact, and efficient.

I’ll tell you more about it below.

Things to Consider Before Buying an Exercise Bike

Before diving into the XTERRA Fitness FB150 Folding Bike, there are a few things you should know about exercise bikes in general.

You may already know these things and, if so, you can skip to the next section.

However, if you’re a newbie to buying exercise bikes, you should pay special attention to these considerations.

Exercise Bike Options

There are a lot of options when it comes to exercise bikes but there are two main options you should consider.

First, there are three types of bikes: upright, recumbent, and dual action.

Then you can choose between two resistance types: physical or magnetic. I’ll briefly describe all these choices.

Bike Types

As mentioned before, there are three types of exercise bikes.

  1. The upright bike is the most popular out of the three. For this type, the pedals are up under your feet and you may have to tilt forward slightly to hold the handlebars. This type can also work your back and core.
  2. The recumbent bike has the pedals in front of your body. This is because you’re sitting a little further back and lower than an upright. These bikes usually have a supporting back to the seat. The purpose of recumbent bikes is to take the pressure off your back. They’re great for people with mobility or back problems.
  3. The third type, the dual action bike, has resistance arm bands built in so you can work your upper body as well as your lower body. These bikes are gaining in popularity.

Resistance Type

You can choose between a magnetic resistance system or a physical resistance system.

Both are great choices. It’s more of a personal preference.

The physical resistance system has pads that rub against the wheel like a regular outdoor bike. The magnetic system doesn’t have any rubbing parts, so they last a lot longer.

However, they’re also a little more expensive upfront than the physical resistance system bikes.

Size and Weight Limit

Exercise bikes are some of the smallest exercise machines you can get for home use.

Despite them already being small, you can get them as compact, folding machines if you need to store them when you’re not using them.

Just keep in mind that the smaller the bike is, the lower the maximum weight that it can handle.

The average compact exercise bike can handle a maximum weight of somewhere between 225 pounds and 275 pounds.

If you need something that can handle more weight than this, you’ll need to consider exercise bikes on the larger end of the spectrum and they probably won’t be folding bikes.

Therefore, you need to make sure you have enough space to keep them set up.

How Much the Bike Can Be Adjusted

People aren’t one-size-fits all, so you want the bike to have some type of ability to be adjusted.

At a minimum, the seat should be able to adjust to different heights. Some models also allow for the seat to move backward and forward.

It’s also great if the handlebars can be adjusted. One other adjustment that you might run across is the pedals.

After all, there are lots of different sized feet.

Features and Benefits of the XTERRA Fitness FB150 Folding Bike

Size and Quality

XTERRA Fitness FB150 Folding Bike 4

The XTERRA Fitness FB150 Folding Bike is a budget-priced, folding, compact bike so it’s no surprise that it’s not a heavy-duty bike.

If you look at it within the category it’s in, you can see that it’s one of the preferred folding bikes because the quality is outstanding.

It’s made from thick metal tubing and is expertly manufactured. It can support up to 225 pounds safely and the seat and handlebars are padded for comfort.

The bike measures 31.9″ L x 18.1″ W x 43.3″ H and weighs 32 pounds.

When folded, it measures 18.1″ L x 18.1″ W x 50.79″ so it’s easy to store in a closet or a corner. Two transportation wheels on the front stabilizer bar makes it easy to move.

Flywheel and Drive Train

The XTERRA Fitness FB150 Folding Bike is a magnetic resistance bike so it doesn’t have pads that rub against the wheel for resistance. It runs smoothly, efficiently, and quietly.

The drive train is equipped with a belt drive which is preferred to a chain drive.

A chain drive is what outdoor bikes use, but the belt drive is smoother and much quieter making the bike suitable for indoors.

Resistance Levels and Adjustability

The XTERRA Fitness FB150 Folding Bike has 8 different resistance levels.

You can change the level using a turn knob found right in front of you as you sit on the bike. It’s conveniently found and easy to turn.

The seat and pedals have a basic level of adjustability. The seat can move up and down.

This makes the bike accommodating for those in a height range of 4′ 10″ to 5′ 10″.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the right bike for tall people, but people with big feet can fit the bike. The pedal straps are adjustable for a plethora of foot sizes.

LCD Display

The LCD display isn’t the most impressive feature of this bike, but it does tell you the information you need to know.

It supplies six key bits of information: scan, speed, distance, time, calories, and pulse.

There is only one button, so this makes it simple to cycle through each measurement whenever you want to.

The best part about it is that it’s battery-powered so you don’t have to plug the bike into an outlet.

BCAN Folding Exercise Bike

The BCAN Folding Exercise Bike is an excellent choice for heavier people. It can support up to 330 pounds of weight easily.

It has a slightly larger LCD screen than the XTERRA and five seat height adjustments. It has an ergonomic frame that should make it easier to ride and the seat has a backrest for extra support.

One thing to note – the bike is supposed to be an upright bike but the ergonomic frame makes it more like a recumbent bike.

Gripping the handlebars while riding may put extra strain on your back.
